Côte d’Ivoire, A Strategic Pillar Of Security And Economic Opportunity In West Africa

As it reinforces its security architecture while sustaining rapid economic growth, Côte d’Ivoire is increasingly asserting itself as a strategic partner for French companies in West Africa. Notably in the security and defense sectors, the country is more ripe than ever with opportunity.

In a region marked by political instability and constant security threats, Côte d’Ivoire stands apart as one of West Africa’s most stable and economically dynamic countries. With its strategic geography and strong economy, the country is increasingly playing a key role in regional stability while strengthening its attractiveness for international investors.

This combination of security guarantees and economic dynamism has reinforced Côte d’Ivoire’s role as a gateway for French companies seeking long-term opportunities in West Africa.

A stability anchor in a volatile regional environment

Côte d’Ivoire stands out as one of the most stable economies and political systems in a region too often affected by security crises. In response to persistent threats along its northern borders and maritime risks in the Gulf of Guinea, the country has gradually strengthened its defense and internal security capabilities.

The Ivorian government continues to increase resources dedicated to sovereign ministries. In 2025, the combined budget of the Ministries of Security and Defense reached approximately €1.95 billion, reflecting the priority given to strengthening national security infrastructure and operational capacity. Budget allocations are expected to remain significant in 2026 as authorities commit to continuing the modernization of equipment, intelligence systems and border surveillance capabilities.

Through these efforts, Côte d’Ivoire is positioned as a key pillar of regional security and stability for West Africa, which helps to strengthen cooperation with international partners.

Security and economic growth: a reinforcing dynamic

Security consolidation is also helping to feed Côte d’Ivoire’s economic momentum. The country, which is a founding member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), remains one of the fastest-growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the International Monetary Fund, growth is projected at around 6.4% in both 2025 and 2026.

Sustained GDP growth, infrastructure investment and a diversified economic base have helped establish the country as a regional locomotive. The economic capital, Abidjan, has become a major business hub and logistics platform connecting economies in the Sahel to global trade routes.

For French companies, this environment opens opportunities in areas such as security technologies, infrastructure engineering, border management systems and defense-related services. In this context, security stability combined with strong economic growth creates a favorable ecosystem for international investors.

A strategic partner for France

Côte d’Ivoire occupies a central position in France’s economic and security partnerships in West Africa. The two countries maintain a longstanding strategic relationship built on cooperation in defense, internal security and civil protection.

The economic partnership has benefits for both countries: Côte d’Ivoire is France’s second-largest client in sub-Saharan Africa, while France ranks among its leading global suppliers. This dense economic relationship is reinforced by the presence of numerous French companies and institutional partnerships.

To further strengthen these ties, Bpifrance is organizing the Parcours Business International Sécurité Défense – Côte d’Ivoire, a programme taking place in Abidjan from April 13 to 16. Designed for French start-ups, SMEs, mid-sized and large companies operating in the security and defense sectors, the initiative aims to facilitate exchanges with leading local institutional authorities — both public and private.

Through targeted meetings, institutional briefings, site visits and participation in the Salon de l’Intelligence Artificielle, de la Défense et de l’Espace (SIADE), participating companies will have the opportunity to position themselves on concrete projects and develop long-term partnerships in the region.
